Unfortunately, our doctors endorsed the 46 acute care beds and 1 ob bed. This endorsenent satisfied a majority of our elected officials.
As a committee member I will request candidates support our request of 60 beds, but realistically believe the Province will go with the doctors endorsement.
The proposed hospital with 46 acute beds is clearly inadequate to meet South Muskoka needs for the next 30 years. It has less acute care care beds than the current hospital’s 67 and substantially less than the 129 proposed for the new hospital in Huntsville. And this proposal is made despite South Muskoka having a larger population that the north and with a much larger seasonal population.
The model proposed requires any acute car patient with a stay of any length to be transferred to the larger Huntsville hospital. South Muskoka’s most seriously ill patients will be transferred away from their family, friends and doctor at a critical time. For thousands of South Muskoka residents like me, that means at least an hour of travel just to visit a family member. Totally unacceptable in my opinion. Surely we can do better for for our citizens than that!
The Province should reject this proposal and request a new model that clearly meets South Muskoka needs for the next 30 or 40 years.
