MAHC made promises to the community. But MAHC’s promises are missing from the plans.

As of March 2026, through several Freedom of Information requests, SSMHC has obtained key reports concerning the proposed South Muskoka hospital location (300 Pine Street) and the Functional Plan submitted to the province.

We are concerned. Those who count on South Muskoka Memorial Hospital for healthcare or work in the healthcare sector locally should be too. [Read More]

SSMHC has asked MAHC for detailed answers on a number of significant issues concerning the hospital redevelopment, including the closure of OB services and the anticipated monumental servicing costs to develop 300 Pine Street. [Read more]

The Save South Muskoka Hospital Committee (SSMHC) is a grassroots, non-profit corporation comprised of volunteers who are dedicated to advocating for two mid-sized, equitable hospitals in both South Muskoka and Huntsville as part of the current >$1B hospital capital redevelopments. [About Us]

The SSMHC does not support, and is opposed to, the Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) “Made in Muskoka” healthcare delivery model. We advocate for significant changes to the Stage 1.3 Functional Plan model while it is before the Province in review (Ministry of Health, Infrastructure Ontario, etc.).

In a recent detailed assessment, SSMHC identifies that Made in Muskoka jeopardizes the health, safety and well-being of the residents of South Muskoka.

SSMHC POSITION UPDATE “IN A NUTSHELL”
The Save South Muskoka Hospital Committee (SSMHC) was formed to support the efforts of our doctors and the community in response to MAHC’s Made in Muskoka hospital plans first announced in January 2024.

In October 2024, following months of community advocacy, the originally proposed 14-bed hospital was changed to a 46-bed hospital for the South Muskoka site. Some local doctors have accepted this modified Made in Muskoka plan as satisfactory to meet basic acute care needs at a future South Muskoka site, but this is not a unanimous position. Local doctors continue to encourage ongoing dialog and changes at the provincial level.   And it is clear that there remains significant opposition in the community to the Made in Muskoka plan for many good reasons, as we identified in our position statement update.

Our committee has determined that it is imperative to continue our efforts on behalf of the community and all healthcare professionals with informed and respectful dialogue to arrive at an equitable hospital plan, which, in our view, continues to be modelled on the Care Close to Home V2 with at least 60 acute care beds at the future South Muskoka Hospital site.

The local physicians have volunteered their expertise to develop an alternative healthcare delivery model called “Care Close to Home.” This model has been unanimously supported by the doctors of South Muskoka.

Made in Muskoka jeopardizes the health, safety and well-being of the residents of South Muskoka.

Care Close to Home serves the healthcare needs of all of Muskoka on an equitable basis across the region. At its core is the goal to ensure that hospital healthcare is accessible across the region into the future. Better healthcare outcomes are achieved through hospital care close to home.

SSMHC strongly supports the Care Close to Home healthcare delivery model, including a minimum of 60 beds

The SSMHC encourages residents to get involved.
